So we strive on. Especially when things aren’t okay or easy. To do otherwise would be spiritual bypassing — and that’s the opposite of Engaged Buddhism.

BuddhaGang?

The Buddhagang Bodhisattva Project is a community of kalyāṇamitras—good friends—who explore, apply, understand, and share the Buddha’s teaching for the sake of all beings.

We’ve spent years building this community on Facebook, doing Engaged Buddhism in real time. Meta once supported this effort with $5,000 in ad credits and even sent a film crew to follow and document the work. But now, the platform has grown increasingly hostile. Still, we stay, because beings are still there—and we don’t abandon beings.

This project is about making Buddhist community alive—relevant, responsive, and rooted in the world we have.

We don’t misrepresent the Buddha. We don’t cling to sectarian labels. What we practice is Engaged Buddhism, and that often means drawing from the Mahāyāna and the bodhisattva path—because beings suffer, and bodhisattvas vow to help.

We’re deeply influenced by the teachings of Thích Nhất Hạnh, especially his insights on interbeing, ethics, and action. But we’re not affiliated with the monasteries or formal institutions he founded. Our community forms through vow, friendship, and clarity—not through hierarchy or branding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why so many words?

Words are empty, and words are meaningful. Speaking and hearing or reading words is karma and all karma has results. We try to share the best, most relevant words, to help beings realize what is best and most relevant. Words are fingers pointing. Don’t get stuck on the finger, but do look to where the fingers point.

You called someone out. That’s not very Buddhist.

Neither is letting beings walk off a cliff for fear of sounding rude. Often, the best advice is exactly what beings do not want to hear. No one is always praised and no one is always blamed.

Are you trying to be a Guru?

We are trying to be good friends, kalyanamitras, and sometimes kalyanamitras teach. So, in a way, maybe. But, in another way– no. We don’t demand blind belief and obedience like some Gurus do.

I don’t get it.

Sit with it for a while. Keep watching. Ask questions and always listen deeply.

The BuddhaGang Bodhisattva Path seems like too much for me.

Then take what you can carry. Come back when your hands are free. Reach out if you want and maybe we can help.

I just want peace and positivity. “Good vibes only.”

Then face suffering and get to work like a Bodhisattva. In this world, there are not good vibes only. In any realm where “good vibes” appear, there will also be bad vibes.

You sound angry.

That’s called disappointment, seasoned with love and understanding. Listen more deeply. It’s not ill-will, there is no idea of an inherently real enemy, it isn’t what the Buddha meant by “anger.” It’s more like samvega.

You’re too intense.

Compared to what – apathy? We’re alive. That comes with some sharp edges and deep care.

You talk like you know everything.

No one of us can know everything. We talk like we’ve read and understood some of the Buddha’s teaching, and some of us have great confidence in the dharma. If you study with us– because we are all always striving to learn more– you can feel and speak with this confidence too.

Is this even Buddhism?

If the Buddha walked past, I’m pretty sure he’d stop and nod. That’s enough.

Why do you mix politics with Engaged Buddhism?

Beings suffer. Mara votes. Engaged Buddhism has always been “politics”—just not the kind most people complain about without reading or practicing first. It’s not partisan. It’s what bodhisattvas do: help communities make wise choices.

We use our Buddhagang spaces for that work. We share what’s happening in the world we have—also the name of a great book by Thích Nhất Hạnh—because staying informed helps us act with clarity, not harm. That’s part of the path.
